RTP launches 2nd European production site

Engineered thermoplastics compounder RTP Co. has opened a new manufacturing plant in Ladenburg, Germany, the company’s second in Europe.

Operating as RTP Deutschland GmbH, the 61,500-square-foot operation will make products including very-long-fiber composites and conductive compounds.

“In addition to expanding manufacturing capacity, the Ladenburg plant also houses on-site product development engineers as well as a quality assurance laboratory,” John Van Wijk, European director of sales, said in a news release.

Winona, Minn.-based RTP now has 11 manufacturing sites. Others include Beaune, France; Suzhou, China; Singapore; Monterrey, Mexico; and six plants in the U.S.

RTP bought the Beaune plant from French thermoplastics compounder Codiplast SNC in 1995. Since then, RTP has significantly expanded its global footprint. The company said a second plant in Europe was necessary because of growth in its market for engineered materials.

In an interview at K 2010, European sales and development manager Colin Rooney said RTP has seen strong demand for compounds based on nylon and polypropylene for the automotive sector.

“If you want to be in automotive [in Europe], Germany is the place,” he said, adding that a number of customers had asked RTP to locate a facility there.

RTP’s long-fiber products and other materials can be used in automotive battery trays, front-end parts and door panels. The first extrusion line at the Ladenburg plant was commissioned in late October, with the second line set to begin production in the first quarter of 2011.

Business in 2009 “wasn’t good for anybody,” Rooney said. “But it came back this year.”

Earlier in 2010. RTP entered the South American market with a sales office and warehouse in Alphaville, Brazil, near São Paulo. Officials said they are needed because of increased demand for domestically made products from the automotive, consumer-goods and energy markets.

RTP ranks as one of North America’s 30 largest compounders and concentrate makers.

3B Partners with Reprocover to Recycle Production Waste into Innovative Composite Solution

Typically, the composite solutions are made of 90% of recycled materials and have proven their ability to replace efficiently commonly used cast iron for the production of sewage trapdoors, manholes, utility access holes, etc.

Replacing metal has long been the challenge of glass fibre reinforced composites in order to reduce cost, complexity and weight. Alongside these attributes, two key performance criteria -- superior impact performance and improved weatherability -- have been achieved. This resulted in Reprocover, together with 3B, developing a product range molded from a thermoset compound reinforced by 50 to 60% Advantex glass.

The Reprocover breakthrough lies in their specialized process of grinding and mixing of the recycled materials. Reprocover also worked on the geometry of the different components of each product in order to maximize the load resistance to weight ratio. All of the applications can be easily fixed to PVC pipes, connections and inspection pits. The Reprocover`s products have been approved by Belgian Water Authorities, which definitely opens many new opportunities in building and road construction.

"The concept created by Reprocover is a huge step forward! It really demonstrates how thanks to the replacement of metal by glass reinforced composite, new markets and applications can benefit from the advantages of lightweight, design flexibility, corrosion resistance and easy processing. In addition, the products display dimensional stability over a large temperature range (from -40°C to 70°C) as well as a chemical resistance to salts and detergents. They open new opportunities in sewage and utility supply markets," stated Dr Eric Martin, Thermoplastic Product Manager of 3B. Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited announced today that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire PET polymer and resins manufacturing facilities located in Spartanburg, S.C. and Querétaro, Mexico from certain subsidiaries of INVISTA B.V.

“This planned acquisition will allow IVL to build upon our expanding global platform, make the company the largest PET producer in the world, and deliver on our strategy to enter into new higher growth regions like Central and Latin America”

The total value of the acquisition will be $420 million less certain assumed liabilities, and includes $229 million for the net fixed assets and equity interests, as well as $174 million for the net working capital of the business, subject to customary adjustments at closing. The transaction is expected to be financed from a combination of cash on hand, amounts available under existing credit facilities and additional debt. The parties anticipate the transaction will close in the first quarter of 2011, pending receipt of necessary regulatory approvals.

INVISTA’s Spartanburg, South Carolina facility produces polyester resins used in bottles for carbonated soft drinks, water, beer, juice, and wine; food and custom-container applications, and polyester staple fiber and specialty polymers for a variety of applications. The Spartanburg operation has a total capacity of 470 kMT per annum. Approximately 490 people are employed at the site.

However, 2,026 exhibitors – 60 percent of the total – come from outside Germany. Italy takes the lead among overseas countries, with 413 exhibitors, followed by China with 247. Taiwan at 139 takes third position, slightly ahead of France at 126, which is in turn ahead of India at 122 and 110 from the United States.

Well over 200,000 visitors are expected to visit the show - 242,000 visitors attended the K2007 event.

Speaking in his role as president of the K2010 exhibitors advisory council, Ulrich Reifenhäuser spoke at the briefing about the difficult times the industry has seen since the 2007 event. “We had this terrible crisis, the biggest catastrophe that the machinery industry has ever experienced,” he said.

Engineered thermoplastics compounder RTP Co. has opened a new manufacturing plant in Ladenburg, Germany, the company’s second in Europe.

Operating as RTP Deutschland GmbH, the 61,500-square-foot operation will make products including very long fiber composites and conductive compounds. “In addition to expanding manufacturing capacity, the Ladenburg plant also houses on-site product development engineers as well as a quality assurance laboratory,” said John Van Wijk, the company’s European director of sales, in a news release.

Underwater Pelletizers: Breaking the 100 t/h barrier
An eye catcher on the Coperion booth B33 in Hall 14 will be the die plate from a UG 1.250, the largest underwater pelletizer in the world. It boasts a range of superlatives: The average cutting diameter is 1250 mm and it can have up to 11,000 die holes. Manufacturing the die plate, its wear protection as well as the uniform distribution of the melt onto the cutting ring present particular challenges. The new UG 1.250 allows throughputs in excess of 100 t/h for polyethylene and water flow rates of up to 1,500 m³/h. The hydraulic control elements and the drive system are based on technology that has proven itself in long term operation on other machine sizes. The first UG 1.250 will go into operation soon. A slightly smaller but similarly constructed UG 925 for polypropylene has been in operation since the middle of 2009.

Coperion also builds exceptionally large underwater pelletizers for thermoplastic elastomers. An example of this is a UG 750 which will go into operation at the beginning of 2011. The design and method of operation reflect the fact that TPE pellets tend to be very sticky. The axial water flow along the knife shaft into the cutting chamber and the radial water flow along the pelletizing knives towards the water chamber exit minimize turbulences in the cutting chamber. This results in fewer collisions between the freshly cut, tacky pellets, which prevents agglomeration.

Melt Pumps for up to 65 t/h of Polyolefins
Coperion presented in-house manufactured melt pumps for the first time at K 2007. The detailed process dependent design factors, for example the type of cooling and the size of the operating clearance, are calculated and specified for each project and product. PolyOne touting new products, upbeat attitude, at K 2010

As it sets sail for Germany and K 2010, PolyOne Corp. is hoping that its recent run of good fortune can continue. The Avon Lake-based compounding and distribution firm is on track to post its second straight profitable year in 2010. And while that may seem like faint praise, it is music to the ears of Chairman and CEO Stephen Newlin. “We’ve done a whole culture transformation,” Newlin said in a recent interview in Avon Lake. “We’re now focused squarely on our customers and have higher expectations and accountability.

Our focus is on new customers and prospects, and we’re driven around customer needs.” Those changes also have produced results on PolyOne’s bottom line. In 2007 — Newlin’s first full year at the helm — the firm eked out an $11.4 million profit on sales of about $2.6 billion. The economic flameout of 2008 hit PolyOne hard, as the firm posted a loss of almost $275 million on sales of about $2.7 billion. After making some tough choices in 2009 — closing a plant in Ontario and cutting almost 400 jobs companywide — PolyOne turned the corner in 2009, earning almost $70 million on a slimmed-down sales total of $2.1 billion.

The turnaround also has been reflected in PolyOne’s per-share stock price. When Newlin joined the firm in early 2006, the price was floating just under $9 per share. It bounced between $6 and $10 through mid-2008 before descending along with most other stocks, bottoming out under $1.50 in March 2009. Since that point, PolyOne’s stock price has been on a steady upward climb, closing Oct. 14 at $13.37. “We did a customer survey right after I started, and a number of people said we were difficult to do business with,” Newlin said. “On product quality, nothing stood out. In delivery and innovation, we were right in the middle of the pack. “That wasn’t good enough. We wanted to be the best in all stages. Our on-time delivery ranged from 81 percent to the mid-90s. “The K show is important to us because we’re a global player,” Newlin said. “There will be a lot of suppliers and business customers there. We want to support the industry and stay connected and have visibility.”

Regarding two of PolyOne’s main end markets — automotive and construction — Newlin said the firm “is dealing with things we can control and influence.”

“We can’t control how many houses or cars are built,” he said. “We’ll never fully abandon these markets, but we need to find ways to grow when they’re down.”

Newlin pointed out that the standard U.S. auto scrap rate — how many cars are taken off the roads each year — is 12 million. That’s slightly ahead of the 11.5 million build number expected for this year.

“That’s just treading water,” he said of those numbers. “Automotive is in the right zone globally, but it’s still down in the U.S. We see continued growth in that market, but we’ve become more of a custom shop.”

Any U.S. construction market recovery “will take a while longer,” according to Newlin. Although the U.S. market eventually could get back to its 50-year average of about 1.5 million new units built per year, the peak of 2 million “won’t be seen again,” he said.

Newlin also anticipates a change in the previously close relationship between housing starts and the performance of PVC-based products such as the compounds that remain a large business for PolyOne.

“People are going to have less to spend on a new house, and we need to match that,” he said.

PolyOne also is working in a challenging market space where it’s entering into sustainable products while still being a major developer of PVC, a resin that’s been targeted by environmentalists for many years.

“We need a sustainability line that goes all the way across our product line,” Newlin said. “But PVC is really difficult to replace unless you can replace its economics.

“Everybody’s for green products — it’s like apple pie — but they don’t always want to pay a 30-40 percent premium. So there’s not going to be a sea change. We’ll continue to pursue parallel paths.”

Newlin also touched on PolyOne’s recently introduced supplier scorecard program, where the firm will assess 30 of its suppliers in a number of performance areas.

“It’s not about beating our suppliers up on price,” he said. “We want them to understand where we’re going with the company. We want to draw them in to technology, open the door and see what it means.”

Future growth also is on the minds of Newlin and other PolyOne executives.

“We’ve got the strongest balance sheet and finances in the history of the company, and we’ll be gearing up our [mergers and acquisitions] activity,” he said. “We’ll look to global growth in technology plays and bolt-on applications. We like our position in Asia, but we’ll keep building on it, and also will look to South America.”

Cellect Plastics announces name change, license

Cellect Plastics LLC has changed its name to Cellect Technologies LLC and has licensed its I-Cell EVA and polyethylene roll business to XL Foam LLC, a private investor group.

Cape Cod-based Cellect Technologies now will concentrate solely on low-carbon-impact specialty foams, including Opflex-brand materials for oil spill cleanup and Microflex LCI for yoga mats and other consumer applications.

Scott Smith, president and owner of Cellect, said in a news release that the deal strengthens his firm’s capital position. He added that the company plans to establish a new headquarters in Florida, Alabama or Massachusetts.

PPG appoints Kerr vice president, fiber glass

PPG Industries has announced that Thomas P. (Tom) Kerr has been appointed vice president, fiber glass, within the company’s Glass segment, reporting to J. Rich Alexander, executive vice president, Performance Coatings, effective immediately. Most recently, Kerr was director, strategic operations, fiber glass.

“Tom’s extensive manufacturing and commercial work within all of PPG’s glass businesses, including experience in North America and Europe, make him well-qualified to lead our fiber glass business,” Alexander said.

Kerr joined PPG in 1978 at the company’s former Crystal City, Mo., glass plant. In 1985, he joined the glass research-and-development function as a project leader focused on advanced insulating glass technology. Kerr joined PPG’s former automotive glass business in 1991 as director of quality, and in 1993 became plant manager at the former Crestline, Ohio, automotive glass plant. Kerr transferred to Paris in 1996 to become director of production for automotive OEM glass in Europe. In March 1998, Kerr returned to the United States to become general manager, automotive OEM products, and in August 2002, director, production, flat glass. He was named director, strategic operations, fiber glass, in 2005.

Kerr earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas.

Canada declares BPA toxic, plans to draft regulations

Canada’s federal government has decided that bisphenol A is a toxic substance and is drafting regulations to manage the chemical. It is the first country to take such an extreme view of the byproduct of certain plastics production.

“Our science indicated that Bisphenol A may be harmful to both human health and the environment and we were the first country to take bold action in the interest of Canadians,” stated Minister of Health Leona Aglukkaq in an Oct. 13 announcement.

The verdict of toxicity was echoed by Minister of the Environment Jim Prentice.

“We are continuing our leadership on this issue and Canadians can rest assured that we are working hard to monitor and manage bisphenol A,” Prentice noted in the announcement.

Bisphenol A has been added to Schedule 1 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, which enables development of regulatory risk management measures.

The recent pronouncement strengthens Canada’s approach to bisphenol A. Nearly two years ago it banned polycarbonate baby bottles because they might contain BPA but it allowed 18.9-liter water bottles. In July 2009 it said BPA did not pose a health risk in bottled water, powdered infant formula and baby foods in glass jars with metal lids. This past summer the federal government announced BPA is present in the urine of most Canadians.

TPE makers facing a global shift to Asia

The world of thermoplastic elastomers is going through some pretty major changes.

“The shift to Asia is the single most important factor affecting TPEs in the current environment,” market analyst Bob Eller said at TPE Topcon, an industry event organized by the Society of Plastics Engineers, held Sept. 14-15 in Akron.

But Eller did not stop there.

“Some TPE markets are approaching maturity in Western markets,” he added. “They’re seeing commodity-like pricing and reduced customization, and that’s opening up the market for smaller companies and making a significant price challenge to established TPEs.

“We’re also seeing a split into commodity and specialty TPEs. That means there are opportunities for custom TPE compounders who are willing to tailor grades. Targeting higher-value applications like air-bag doors.”

Eller’s comments may not have been welcome news to North American TPE makers, who have long described their products as value-added specialty materials, residing far from the commodity realm.

On a more positive note, Eller — owner of Robert Eller Associates Inc. in Akron — also pointed out numerous growth opportunities for TPEs around the world. Vehicles in China, for example, use only 4.4 pounds of thermoplastic vulcanizate per vehicle, while India checks in even lower at 3.3 pounds. The global average is 5.7 pounds. New markets for TPVs and other types of TPEs include weatherstripping, hoses and belts and elastic fibers and films.

“We’ve seen the introduction of higher-performance [thermoplastic polyurethanes],” Eller said. “And an expanded range of [styrenic block copolymer] chemistry, with process technology allows for hard/soft combinations and foam/solid configurations.”

Moving forward, Eller said that new Asian TPE compounders may have an advatange over Western competitors, even if Western firms already have valuable automotive approvals. Automotive continues to hold a 35-40 percent share of the TPE market. U.S, automotive demand for TPEs is improving, but other regions of the world now have more growth prospects, he explained.

“Western companies need to go into Asia with specialties, not with a broad product line,” Eller said. “The global TPE life-cycle curve is changing in shape. It’s a substantially higher curve that’s more diverse, and with a higher number of compounders competing.”

Plastic Recycling: The Facts You Need to Know

If you have heard about the Plastic Continent -- the floating island of plastic twice the size of Texas in the Pacific Ocean -- then you understand how crucial it is to recycle plastic. Right now, only 5% of plastics worldwide are recycled. Some of this is ignorance: most of the world still simply doesn't understand the danger plastics pose to our environment and our food chain. But plastics themselves are complicated. Even if you want to recycle your plastics, and even if you dutifully separate plastics from the rest of your household waste and put it out on the curb in its blue or green recycle bin, your plastics might still end up in the Plastic Continent. Why is this?

Different Types of Plastic

Look at the underneath side of a plastic bottle or plastic container. Inside the familiar reduce, reuse, recycle triangle (“chasing arrows”) logo is a number between one and seven. This number indicates what kind of plastic that container is made from. Some plastics are easy to recycle, but other plastics are much harder to recycle. As a result, most municipal recycling facilities only recycle the easiest plastics: plastics 1 and 2. What happens to plastics 3 through 7? At some recycling facilities, these are gathered until they have enough to send to a larger recycling facility that does recycle these types of plastics. But at other recycling facilities, the same thing happens to plastics 3 through 7 as what would have happened at your house if you didn't have that handy recycling bin: it goes to the landfill, or the Pacific's Plastic Continent.

Plastics #1 and #2

Plastic #1 is polyethelyne terephthalate (PET). This is the most commonly used plastic, and it\'s the easiest to recycle. Your plastic soda bottle, salad dressing bottle, and cooking oil bottle are probably all made from PET. More than 2.3 billion pounds of PET are recycled annually.

Plastic #2 is high density polyethelene (HDPE). Most milk jugs, detergent bottles, and many food containers are made from HDPE. Unfortunately, some plastics marked with a #2, such as yogurt cups, are not actually recyclable. This is because other chemicals have been added to the plastic in order to mold it into the desired shape. These additives make recycling some of these #2 items basically impossible.

Plastics #1 and #2 make up 96% of all the plastic bottles produced in the United States. Nevertheless, 80% of plastic bottles still wind up in a landfill, even though 80% of Americans have access to a method for recycling these bottles.

Plastics #3 through #7

The rest of the plastics make up pretty much everything that\'s not a plastic bottle. Just think of all the plastics in your home -- your toothbrush, cling wrap, plastic bowls, plastic cups, drinking straws, last night\'s leftovers, that almost-impossible-to-open package your new iPhone came in, your computer, your DVD cases... plastic is everywhere.

These plastics can all be categorized as the plastics #3 through #7. None of them are particularly easy to recycle, so even though your recycling guy will take it from your curb, that doesn't necessarily mean it will become tomorrow's soda bottle. However, by researching recycling facilities in your area, you can find places to recycle these less common plastics.

The Bottom Line When it Comes to Plastic Recycling

Plastic is much harder to recycle than other materials. Because it breaks down during the recycling process, it can only be recycled so many times -- this is why many recyclers prefer so-called “virgin plastics”, or plastics that haven't been recycled before because they make a better product. That means that even if you do the best you can to recycle all your plastics, some of them might still wind up in the dump.

The clear conclusion we must draw is that even the most conscientious recycling is not enough when it comes to plastics: ultimately, we have to reduce our consumption. The process of producing plastics, many plastics themselves, and the aftermath of plastic use can all be described as toxic. Nearly all manufacturing processes for the different types of plastic listed above involve some degree of toxicity, and as these plastics disintegrate in landfills or in the ocean, these toxic chemicals find their ways back into our soils, our water, our food, and our bodies.

So please recycle plastic. But better yet, stop buying plastic wherever possible.

Plastic is used to make, or wrap around, many of the items we buy or use. The problem comes when we no longer want these items and how we dispose of them, particularly the throwaway plastic material used in wrapping or packaging. Plastic is handy, lightweight and easily discarded. Too easily discarded.

Plastics are not themselves the problem. They are useful materials which can be produced with relatively little damage to the environment. The problem is the excessive use of plastics in one-time applications together with careless disposal.

Take a look around you. Plastic bags can readily be seen hanging from the branches of trees, flying about on windy days, settled amongst grasses and floating on streams. They clog up drains causing water and sewage to overflow and become the breeding grounds of germs and bacteria that spread disease.

Plastics are utilized because they are easy and inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable. Unfortunately these same useful qualities make plastic an overwhelming pollution problem. Inferior quality and low cost means plastic is readily discarded. Plastics take around 300 years to photo degrade. That is an unconscionable amount of waste, so much that more than one million bags are used every minute and their impact on the planet is devastating. Plastic bags are only part of the problem. America alone, yearly produces in excess of 800,000 tons of plastic bottle pollution. World-wide our precious planet is defaced and poisoned with more than 100 million tons of plastic pollution annually.

According to the California Costal Commission, over 80% of refuse within waterways, most of it being plastic, originates on land rather than coming from boats.

Plastic affects marine wildlife in deadly ways: entangling creatures and by being consumed.

Turtles are particularly devastated by plastic pollution. All seven of the world\'s turtle species are already endangered or threatened for a multitude of reasons. Turtles become entangled in plastic fishing nets, and many sea turtles have been found dead with plastic garbage bags in their stomachs. Studies indicate turtles mistake these floating semi-transparent bags for jellyfish and eat them. The turtles die an inhumane death from choking or from being unable to eat. A dead turtle found off the coast Hawaii was found to have more than 1000 pieces of plastic in its stomach including part of a comb, a toy truck wheel and lank of nylon rope.

There is great environmental concern about the effect of plastic trash on all marine mammals. These elegant creatures are already under threat for a variety of other reasons: e.g. seal and whale populations have been decimated by unregulated hunting. A recent study concluded that in excess of 100,000 marine mammals die needlessly each year from the deadly effects of plastic pollution.

World-wide over 100 bird species are known to ingest plastic particles. This includes 36 species found off the coast of South Africa. A recent study of blue petrel hatchlings at South Africa\'s remote Marion Island showed that 90% of the chicks examined had plastic in their digestive systems, apparently fed to them accidentally by their parents. South African seabirds are among the worst affected in the world. Plastics remain in the bird?s stomachs, impeding digestion and causing starvation.

Scientific studies are not conclusive about how much plastic birds and fish are consuming, however scientist agree that plastic in seafood is likely to be harmful for people. Plastic is compared with better understood toxic materials such as mercury. Plastic acts like a sponge when in contact with poisons such as PCBs, concentrating them at levels that are millions of time more than in seawater.

The ingredients in plastic have been linked to cancer and reproductive abnormalities. Bisphenol A, found in plastic water bottles, has been shown to produce cancer in lab rats, to disrupt hormone levels and is associated with diabetes and obesity.

Scientists also voice concerns that the massive swirls of floating plastic could contribute to global warming by creating a dense shade canopy that makes it difficult for plankton to grow.

Plastic wrapping and bags should be required to carry a warning label advising of the dangers of plastic pollution and shoppers should be encouraged to use eco-friendly shopping bags of organic, natural materials or recycled plastic fibers. Tell this to our law makers. The situation only continues to worsen. We must act now!

When a tax levy was imposed on plastic bags in Ireland, usage dropped by 90 percent. Several other countries have already banned the use of plastic bags with significant impact. America must follow their example. Support re-cycling programs and promote environmental awareness in your local community. Be pro-active in asking governments to make changes and consumers to re-think their attitudes. Purchase products requiring less plastic packaging and inform store management why you are doing so. Choose to drink tap or carbon filtered water from a glass lined reusable container. If you do purchase plastic bottled, dispose to the container properly. Recycle.

With the increase in environmental awareness, it has become obvious that there is more that we can do to create a sustainable society. Module dryer update – small load dryer for engineering plastics

The new generation of stationary material drying systems is presented at the K with the example of a SOMOS® D200 dry air dryer (air flow 200 m³/h) and a module hopper system with drying hoppers from 50 to 300 l. The technical innovations in design, process control and control engineering that are utilised here combine great operating comfort with a further improvement in energy efficiency. This results amongst other things in the new process control of the rotary desiccant container of the D dryer taking a much shorter time for regeneration of the drying agent, which means that the energy required for this can be used more effectively. At the same time all module hoppers have their own control system structured on a universal concept. This independent mode of operation makes things like the expansion of the module system through the adding on of one or several drying hoppers considerably easier. The tried and tested ALAV and Super-SOMOS® control mechanisms used in SOMOS® dryers continue to provide high energy efficiency adapted to the respective current material throughput.

The new SOMOS® TP 8 compressed air dryer extends the series of small load dryers specially designed for multi-component injection moulding in the processing of engineering plastics. With an insulated drying hopper of eight litres capacity and a freely selectable drying temperature from 60 to 180°C it is suitable for throughputs of up to approx. 2 kg/h. The dryer works on the principle of air expansion and can be fitted with conveyer equipment that is operated directly from the dryer control unit.

Communicating conveyer equipment – high-precision, gravimetric dosing of small amounts

The current SOMOS® FG series of suction conveying equipment differs from existing models particularly in its range of features: the devices are fitted with control units which can communicate with each other. There are also cost advantages with this further feature, as up to 16 conveyer units can now be flexibly linked together to a composite without the requirement of a central control.

Another innovation at the K is a fully weighing dosing system for small amounts which can be used in the SOMOS® Gramix S9 or Gramix E gravimetric dosing and mixing systems for the production of multi-component mixtures for extrusion processes. Designed for throughputs of approx. 2 kg/h down to 200 g/h, a dosing precision of ± 1 % is achieved. In a throughput of 200 g/h the target weight of approx. 3.3 g/min thus varies on average by a mere ± 33 mg. This high dosing precision has clear advantages in the increasingly used practice of dosing very small amounts of highly concentrated masterbatches into the main flow of material.

New dimension: Infrared dryer for 3.500 kg/h PET bottle flakes realized

The impressive throughput rate of 3,500 kg/h PET bottle flakes is the characteristic of the largest infrared drum (IRD) ever realized which was delivered by KREYENBORG PLANT TECHNOLOGY in the first half of 2010. The IRD with the remarkable dimensions of 2,500 mm drum diameter and 5,400 mm drum length, with 540 kW of installed radiator output, opens up new dimensions for the processing of recycled PET bottles.

The large machine is designed to dry PET bottle flakes with a bulk density of about 0.35 kg/dm ³, from max. 1 % initial moisture to < 0.05% and to crystallize it at the same time. It is important for these applications to achieve a homogeneous residual moisture of the flakes. In practice this can be subject to significant variations due to the treatment process and the storage of the material. Due to the short residence time of 10-15 minutes, there is significantly less material in the drying process than in conventional systems. This typical advantage of the IRD is of immense help, as no bulky drying vessels are needed - particularly at large throughput rates combined with the low bulk density of the flakes.

With the infrared drying technology KREYENBORG PLANT TECHNOLOGY is present on the market since 2005. They offer machine sizes from 20 – 4,000 kg/h throughput rates, both in continuous and batch operation.

Georg Fischer expanding new Beijing pipe plant

Plastic pipe maker Georg Fischer Piping Systems has opened a plant in Beijing to tap what it said is demand for higher-quality building components, as it saw sales growth there rise 45 percent in the first half of the year.

The Schaffhausen, Switzerland-based firm said the 58 million Chinese yuan ($8.7 million) Beijing factory has the capacity to make 20,000 kilometers of pipe annually. China is now its largest market, the company said.

The investment came as the firm announced a partnership in September with Dow Chemical Co. to promote a new Chinese national standard for polyethylene raised-temperature-resistance pipe for hot and cold water applications.

That new standard will create opportunities because it will “carve out a high performance segment” in China’s existing pipe market and increase regulatory standards, the company said. The two firms plan a series of technical seminars across China targeting designers, testing bodies and others.

As China has sought to upgrade its water and gas piping systems, and consumers pushed for more reliable systems, China accounted for 14 percent of GF Piping Systems total sales in 2009, and that is likely to be “significantly more” in 2010, said Pietro Lori, president of GF Piping, in a statement.

The piping systems unit had 2009 sales of 1.06 billion Swiss francs ($1.09 billion), down 13 percent from 2008, as the company implemented restructuring and cost cutting programs. First half 2010 sales in the unit were 584 million Swiss francs ($603.0 million).

Lori said he expects the 16,700 square meter Beijing factory to be at high capacity utilization rates within two years.

It will open with two extrusion lines, with plans to add additional lines to boost capacity to 80,000 kilometers of pipe annually, likely within one year of finishing the initial phase of investment, the company said. That initial phase is expected to be complete in August 2011.

The factory employs 60 now with plans to add another 100 by the end of the initial phase.

The Beijing factory will make building technology systems for hot and cold water installations, along with heating and geothermal systems. It will also make fittings, valves, instrumentation and control technology, and will have an on-site training facility.

The factory gives GF Piping 12 factories in Asia, doubling its footprint there in the last five years, the company said. It opened a manufacturing operation in India last year, and one in Malaysia in 2008.

Aside from their renewable corn source, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions, the products are fully compostable.

Proganic: Injection Mouldable PHA Compound

Germany-based Proganic has developed a new bio-polymer compound based on PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates) blended with renewable vegetable oils, waxes and natural minerals. It can be used as a replacement for a variety of thermoplastics including PP and ABS. The Proganic compound is home compostable in both open and closed composters at 20°C. It is currently being used by Propper of Germany to produce watering cans, flower pots, self adhesive hooks, egg cups and spoons, and strainers.

EconCore – PLA Honeycomb Sandwich Structure

EconCore of Belgium has developed a continuous production technology to manufacture a PLA-based lightweight hexagonal honeycomb structural sheet. The process sandwiches the core between two skins – made of either 100% PLA or a PLA flax composite – in a single production step. Arkema opening PVDF plant in China

French materials firm Arkema Group will open a new polyvinylidene fluoride plant in China early next year, its first PVDF facility in Asia.

The company will open the factory at its large manufacturing complex in Changshu, Jiangsu province, and said it is part of an effort to strengthen distribution of its Kynar PVDF resins in Asia. In particular it singled out the high-performance coatings market.

A company spokeswoman declined to reveal capacity details or investment, citing company policy.

The Colombes, France-based company said the Kynar resins are used in a wide variety of applications, including high-performance lithium ion batteries and photovoltaic panels.

New ASTM Standard Covers Society of the Plastic Industry's Resin Identification Code

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., -The Resin Identification Code (RIC) system is a means of sorting different types of plastics from household waste. The RIC was developed by the Society of the Plastics Industry in 1988. The RIC assigns a numeral from 1 to 7, with a "chasing arrows" symbol around the number, to a piece of plastic to indicate its type.

SPI recognized the importance of the involvement of the technical stakeholder community in updating and maintaining the RIC. In 2008, SPI approached ASTM about adopting the RIC system as an ASTM standard. RIC is now covered in a new ASTM International standard, ASTM D7611, Practice for Coding Plastic Manufactured Articles for Resin Identification. The new standard was developed by Subcommittee D20.95 on Recycled Plastics, part of ASTM International Committee D20 on Plastics.

"Since their beginnings in the mid-1800s, plastics have continued to evolve and new materials and applications have been developed to meet societal needs," said SPI President and CEO William Carteaux. "These innovations have continued since SPI developed the original Resin Identification Code more than 20 years ago and we fully support ASTM's work to involve more stakeholders and develop a new standard that modernizes the Code."

Thomas Pecorini, technology fellow, Eastman Chemical Co., and a D20 member, notes that while the RIC system was originally designed to assist sorters in waste recovery facilities, it has since taken on additional uses. "Scrap brokers use the RIC to trade materials," says Pecorini. "Municipalities use the RICs to tell their constituents which resins are acceptable for collection."

In addition to these uses, Pecorini notes that some states use the RIC system to charge fees for certain packaging products, and brand owners and retailers use the RIC when considering end-of-life options for packaging products.

Pecorini says that ASTM D7611 will be used by those who buy, sell and trade waste plastics that have completed their originally intended life. "It will be used by municipalities, waste collectors, scrap brokers, recyclers, brand owners, retailers and anyone else interested in understanding and directing the end of life of plastic materials."

# Now that ASTM D7611 has been published, D20.95 plans to consider the following questions for future revisions of the standard: Are the chasing arrows surrounding the numbers still appropriate?

Ticona Engineering Polymers has added a new member to its series of flame-resistant liquid crystal polymers. The company said the material is the first LCP tailored for thermoforming.

“With high melt viscosity and melt strength, this new LCP is ideally suited for extrusion and thermoforming processes,” said Edward Hallahan, marketing manager, high-performance polymers. “Initially, Ticona is offering a 40 percent mineral filled grade, Vectra Trex 541, which provides impact and notched impact strengths significantly higher than those of other mineral-filled grades.”

Vectra Trex 541 provides the following performance attributes, according to Ticona:

* High heat deflection temperature of 245°C;
* 20 percent improvement in impact performance versus standard 40 percent mineral-filled LCP;
* Higher melt viscosity – up to three times greater than standard 40 percent mineral-filled LCP.

Ticona developed Vectra Trex 541 for use by customers who extrude sheets and films that can be thermoformed to finished components. Suggested applications include:

* Medical – for use in sterilizable trays and equipment;
* Aerospace – meeting flame, smoke and toxicity requirements for use in aircraft interior applications;
* Semiconductor – providing high stiffness and a low coefficient of thermal expansion for use in chip carriers.

Vectra Trex 541 extends application possibilities for LCPs in the kitchenware and food industries, says Ticona. It can be vacuum-formed into large-format sheets or cooking pans capable of heating up and cooling down rapidly.

According to the company, cookware made of LCP is an excellent alternative to baking pans and casseroles made of metal, “which are harder to clean, noisy and heavy.”

Vietnam’s Plastics Industry To Hit a Billion

The Vietnamese plastics industry is capable of achieving an export turnover of US$1 billion this year, the Viet Nam Plastics Association (VPA) said.

"This goal is possible because in the first seven months of this year, the industry earned more than US$550 million from exporting plastic products," said the VPA's Administrative Affairs Division.

If the target is met, total plastic export turnover would have increased by between 15 percent and 20 percent while export volume would have grown by about 20 per cent.

The Industry and Trade Information Centre (VITIC) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade announced that in July alone, the plastics industry earned a turnover of $86.4 million, a year-on-year increase of 24.2 percent.

From the beginning of this year, VITIC said, monthly plastics export turnover had averaged $80 million per month.

Vietnamese plastic products are exported to more than 70 countries and territories. Seven of which have recorded import turnovers of more than $1 million, VITIC said.

Japan is now the largest importer of Vietnamese plastic products, accounting for 26.5 percent of Viet Nam's total plastic export volume. The country is followed by the US with 13.2 percent.

Other major markets include Germany and Cambodia which account for 8.1 per cent and 6.8 per cent of the country's total exports, respectively.

According to the VPA, about 50 per cent of Vietnamese export plastic products are packing products, while 15 per cent are household appliances and 35 per cent includes products such as technological products or office supplies.

Viet Nam has more than 2,000 plastic products manufacturers, of which 90 per cent are small- and medium-sized companies. About 80 per cent of them are based in HCM City and its neighbouring provinces such as Dong Nai, Long An and Binh Duong.

Only 15 per cent of manufacturers are based in the north and 5 per cent are in the central region.

The industry's revenue in 2009 totalled $4.5 billion, a $500 million decrease compared with 2008 due to lower prices.

World's First Plastic-Sorting Robot Recognizes Six Types of Plastic

Japanese control instrument manufacturer IDEC Corp., Mitsubishi Electric Engineering Corp., and Osaka University announced on February 10, 2010, that they have successfully developed the world's first plastic sorting machine, which employs a robot to separate different types of plastic. The companies began demonstration testing of the robot at Nara Co-op and Osaka University Co-op, two consumers' cooperatives in Japan's Kansai region.

At present, various organizations in Japan such as municipalities, co-ops, supermarkets, and schools are involved in the effort to collect resources for recycling. The collection of plastic resources, however, has been limited to the one or two types that are discernible to the human eye, so not all plastics that can be recycled are recovered. This unsorted recyclable plastic waste is usually just incinerated.

The robots used in this initiative are equipped with laser diode sensors that function as "eyes" to differentiate between six types of plastic. Their performance was tested in urban areas and at the university co-op.

Asian Petrochemicals Market - Shell Chemicals

Shell Chemicals announced the successful first turnaround at the CSPCL - "Nanhai" petrochemicals joint venture complex in Guangdong, China. Nanhai is a joint venture with China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC). The turnaround was completed while simultaneously carrying out the debottlenecking of an ethylene cracker and process units. Both were finished ahead of time and within budget.

Debottlenecking the ethylene cracker, ethylene oxide/ethylene glycols, and styrene monomer/propylene oxide process units will improve the site\'s competiveness by increasing capacity and reducing unit costs. After the debottlenecking, the annual ethylene capacity went from 800 kilotonnes per annum to 950 ktpa, with total petrochemical production capacity at the plant increasing from 2.3 million tonnes to 2.7 million tonnes.

"Executing a turnaround and simultaneous debottlenecking project on thisscale, within budget and on time is impressive and highlights the robust working partnership between Shell and CNOOC," said Ben van Beurden, Executive Vice President, Shell Chemicals. "The decision to increase capacity at Nanhai supports the Shell strategy to grow selectively and to continue to remain a leader in the expanding Asian petrochemicals market."

The debottlenecking project included construction of an eighth liquid cracking furnace for light and heavy feedstock. Four out of five derivative plants were debottlenecked by 10% to 30%. The planned turnaround took place in March and April this year. In addition to a broad range of planned maintenance activities, more than 1,000 pressure vessels were opened for statutory inspections. The project also included significant instrumentation work.

The CNOOC and Shell Petrochemicals Company Limited (CSPCL) is 50 per cent owned by Shell Nanhai BV, a Shell company, and 50 per cent owned by the CNOOC Petrochemicals Investment Company Limited. It began operations in January 2006 and supplies products primarily to Guangdong and the high consumption areas of China’s southeast coastal economic zones.

WRAP’s market situation report also identifies further key themes from the plastics recycling sector:

• The plastic bottle recycling rate now stands at over 40% and there has been extensive investment in UK plastic bottle processing capacity over the past two years;

• Attention has now turned to collecting and developing infrastructure to recycle mixed packaging plastics, less than 5% of which is currently recycled. Around 20% of local authorities already operate kerbside mixed plastic collections, and 2011 will see the operation of the UK’s first mixed plastic reprocessing facility;

• Recycling of non-packaging plastics has also increased, this is partly as a result of regulatory factors, however a further driver for market development was the launch of the Non-Packaging Plastics Quality Protocol.

The 14th INTERPLASTICA took place from 25 - 28 January 2011 and was held at the Krasnaya Presnya Expocenter in Moscow, once again in parallel to the UPAKOVKA/UPAK ITALIA trade fair for packaging technology. A sum total of around 800 exhibitors rented approximately 15,000 square metres of exhibition space.

“The market appears to have bottomed out now and things seem to be gradually improving for the Russian market. Before the global economic crisis, sales in the region had seen years of steady growth. Bernd Nötel from the association for plastics and rubber machinery, a division of VDMA, confirmed that there are signs of a new wind.

Alessio Fineo from the Italian plastics and rubber machinery manufacturers association Assocomaplast confirmed the optimism expressed by his German counterparts – albeit somewhat more cautiously. “Although the number of Italian exhibitors has dropped in comparison to last year, the companies represented here have reported having made excellent contacts and are very satisfied. Overall, the signs show that the market is recovering, but the industries which our customers are in are too diverse to draw any general conclusions.
